LWCA E-News 2
Hi everyone:
Here's the latest Lake Winona News:
We completed and filed an Interim Emergency
Evacuation Plan for the Lake Winona Dam.
This was required by the NJDEP and brings us another step towards
complying with their Dam regulations.
I contacted John Focacci (697-2032) to inquire about
having a Lake Winona presence at Jefferson Day, Saturday, July 7. My idea was to publicize the organization,
distribute informational flyers, take applications for Membership and sell
something as a fundraiser. Mr. Focacci
thought we would need to secure a vendor space if we are selling, which is
$45. If we want to be there just to
promote, a service space is free if we help with the cleanup or $10. I saw the AIM News article about Jefferson
Day and there I read that we could sell only "items which directly promote
their organization can carry a company logo, e.g. T-shirts, hats, mugs,
etc." at a service table.
If we create advertising/display material, we could
in the future also take it to political and corporate fundraisers on our
behalf. Maybe we could have a
presentation to Rotary Club meeting?
On Saturday morning, I met with AAA Dock and Dredge
(27 Prospect Point Road, 663-4998). We
were exploring the possibility of dredging the swimming area. Because of EPA restrictions, this couldn't
be done until November/December. Using
small crane dredging equipment, he thought about $2000 would do an area the
length of the beach to 30 feet into the Lake; one day's work. We have to file the permit as soon as
possible.
This company also has experience in
repairing/building docks, spillways and footbridges. So, possibly this could be contacted for all our construction
needs.
The footbridge can't be constructed until the
spillway wing walls are repaired.
Recommendation of an arched self-supporting galvanized steel structure
with wooden floorboards.
This company could give us an estimate on the dock
after being provided with a few measurements:
the distance from the shore of the outermost supports and the depth of
the water there. He recommended PVC
pipe casing over the existing steel posts and filled with concrete. The existing concrete pad on the dam should
also be replaced with a new pad that reflects the lower water level of the
Lake.
We are looking into getting new pea gravel for the
playground and sand for the beach.
We need to get a backhoe on the beach to begin
repairing the erosion in advance of the sand delivery. Can anyone help?
The Bird Banding Demonstration is scheduled for Saturday,
May 19, 8:30 to 11:00 AM. A nice group
would be reassuring! Press releases
were sent to area newspapers and flyers were distributed in the neighborhood. It should be interesting!
We are very much in need of neighborhood support in
the form of Memberships! This
organization has to get back on its feet.
Property taxes are unrelenting.
The expenses associated with dam/spillway repairs will be
significant. There is a lot of work to
be done to save and enhance our facility and Lake Winona. We will all benefit from this effort. Be a responsible neighbor and join the
LWCA! Thank you.
John Nyman
