NEWS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

• We were all saddened to learn of the passing of Joseph Fickensberger, a long-time LWCA Member and a fixture in this community. He has done a lot for the Association and our neighbors over the many years he has lived here, and he will be sorely missed.

• Our thoughts and get well wishes go out to Helen Gunste who suffered a fall recently that resulted in fractures to both feet. She is recuperating at Dover Christian Nursing Home and visitors are most welcome.

• We will be sending out notice of the next Lake Winona General Meeting shortly. On the agenda of this very important meeting is the presentation of the 2003 Budgets. The Lake Winona Reservation property owners in attendance at this meeting will have the opportunity to review and (hopefully) approve the budget for Lake Winona.

• Because of all the annoying pop up ads that have become the unfortunate “price” of being on a free web hosting server, we left FortuneCity.Com, the former host of the Lake Winona Civic Association web site. We moved the LWCA pages to a directory on the new WinonaFolk web site, which is free of advertising. You can continue to access the LWCA site via the CJB redirect service by typing in http://www.LWCA.cjb.net. Or you can also get there directly: http://www.WinonaFolk.org/LWCA/index.html. We will try to enhance the site to generate more interest and interactivity. Right now, there is a Message Board where there can be a public discussion on issues relevant to the Lake Winona community. Check it out. Get involved!

• There will be a Children’s Halloween Party on Saturday, October 26 in the afternoon: 1 – 3 PM. Our hosts are Diane Della Volpe (973-663-5537) and Lori Kuzma (lakuzma@aol.com) who you should contact for more information.

• The Winona Folk Club is looking for music lovers to help bring music to the Winona Folk stage. Annual dues are $15 for a single person or a couple. Family dues are $25. We would like to purchase a sound system and these funds will also support the work of getting the word out. Please contact John Nyman at John@WinonaFolk.org

• The Winona Folk Acoustic Music Series continues with a special performance by Jodee James and the Jodee James Band on Saturday, November 2, at 8 PM. Doors open at 7:30. Jodee James is a singer, songwriter, professional dreamer and lover of Welsh folk songs. Jodee’s voice is captivating and determined. Singing in both Welsh and English, telling a bit of poetic history, sometimes in traditional song, sometimes in original song-stories, Jodee reaches out to the listener, painting a picture of places not so long ago forgotten with an emphasis on Welsh “ways” as they have been over the ages. Jodee makes her home in nearby Hackettstown and has played a wide variety of venues over the years, including the New Jersey Folk Festival this past spring.

Although noted as a solo artist, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, Jodee often performs with two other musicians: Lesl Harker on flute, whistle and backing vocals, and Dave Leszczynski on percussion. Together, rendered as the Jodee James Band, they present that magical balance of moods and tempos – from a lively Welsh jig to a free spirited air, some familiar and some perhaps not so familiar, waiting to dance about in our hearts.

I had the pleasure of seeing Jodee and Lesl play at the Harvest Festival Days in Hackettstown a few weeks ago. I thoroughly enjoyed their music and I am very happy to bring them to Lake Winona and introduce them to our neighborhood family. Bring the whole family. You’ll like this.

The Winona Folk Acoustic Music Concert Series is held at the Lake Winona Civic Center, an intimate new music showcase. The room seats 50, so everyone is guaranteed a very personal music experience. Refreshments are available.

The Lake Winona Civic Association is a non profit corporation sponsoring a program of educational and recreational activities for Lake Winona and the community at large.
